The North Central men’s soccer team finished its 2017 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) season with a record of 5-3 and an appearance in the CCIW tournament, tying the 1994 team’s record of a 5-0 start in conference play.
The Cardinals’ versatility and competitiveness earned them seventh- and ninth-place spots on the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Central Region poll over the course of three weeks in October.
Jon Borzick ’18 and Gavin Sanchez ’19 were named to the All-CCIW Second Team. Borzick, a team captain this season and the team leader in assists, is a four-time All-CCIW player and a three-time Academic All-CCIW selection. Sanchez led the team in goals and points scored this year and is a two-time Academic All-CCIW selection.
Goalkeeper Connor O’Neill ’21 tied the freshman single-season shutout record with five, a record that had been held by Mike McEvoy ’11 for more than nine seasons.
Defensive leaders Andreas Kristiansson’20 and Sean Sweeney ’21 stood out with their aggressive play, helping the Cardinals to the third-fewest goals allowed in the CCIW.
Though the Cardinals ended their season earlier than desired, North Central looks to improve as a multi-dimensional team next season.
