Neil Nicholson, associate professor of mathematics, has been appointed the College’s new Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR). FARs work cooperatively with their athletic departments to protect the academic integrity of intercollegiate athletics and to ensure athletic goals are consistent with the goals of the institutions they represent.
Nicholson replaces Diane Anstine, dean of the School of Business and Entrepreneurship, who has served as North Central’s FAR since 2004. Anstine stepped down to focus on her responsibilities as dean, an appointment that became effective July 1.
“When I first learned about this position, I thought it was something I might want to do some day,” says Nicholson, who has served as the faculty mentor for the wrestling program since arriving on campus six years ago. “I’ve really enjoyed the relationship with the coaches, getting to know the students from an athletic perspective and seeing how athletics supports the academic experience here.
“There’s an understanding at North Central that what takes place in practices, team meetings and competitions improves the student as a person and that’s one of the goals of the College,” he adds.
Nicholson serves as the faculty advisor for North Central’s Cycling and Multisport Club and also owns a Road Runners Club of America Coaching Certification from the American College of Sports Medicine.
